You own your data. You have the right to delete your AfriX account at any time. When you do, we will delete all personal data within 7 days. This page explains what happens — and what to do before you go.
1. What gets deleted
When you delete your account, the following data is permanently removed from AfriX servers within 7 days:
- Your account profile and login credentials
- Your family trees and all member information
- All stories, audio, video, and text content you uploaded
- Photos and media associated with your account
- Verification history and XBN token records
- Private messages and communications within the app
- Usage logs and activity data tied to your account
2. What does NOT get deleted
Blockchain hashes
Any stories you've minted as Vault NFTs on the Bantu blockchain will remain there permanently. Important: only the cryptographic hash of your story is stored on chain — not your actual personal data. The blockchain records that a verified story exists and who verified it, but contains no personal information. These NFTs are assets you own; they belong to your wallet, not to AfriX.
Shared family data
If other family members contributed to your tree or added verified information, their contributions remain in their own copies of the family tree data. You can request they delete it, but ultimately they control their own accounts.
Legal records
We may retain certain data for legal, tax, and compliance purposes — transaction records and information needed to comply with financial regulations or law-enforcement requests. Such retention is strictly limited and governed by applicable law.
3. Before you delete: recommendations
Deletion is permanent. Before deleting your account, consider:
- Export your tree. Download a GEDCOM file with all your family data. You can import it into another genealogy platform or keep it as a backup.
- Download your media. Save photos, audio, and video before deletion. These will not be accessible after deletion.
- Contact family members. Let them know you're deleting your account so they can save shared stories or photos.
- Note your NFTs. Write down the asset codes of any Vault NFTs you've minted — they remain in your blockchain wallet after account deletion.
4. How to delete your account
- Log into your AfriX account at app.afrix.org
- Go to Settings → Account
- Scroll to “Delete Account”
- Tap the red “Delete My Account” button
- Confirm by typing your email address
- Confirm the deletion. You will receive an email notification.
5. What happens after deletion
- You are immediately logged out
- Your account and family trees become inaccessible
- Other family members see that your contributions are no longer available
- You cannot log back in with the same email address
- Within 7 days, all personal data is deleted from our servers
6. Account reactivation
Account deletion is permanent. We cannot reactivate deleted accounts or restore deleted data. If you change your mind later, you can create a new account with the same email address, but all previous data will be gone. For this reason, we strongly recommend exporting your data before deletion.
7. Data subject rights
Under GDPR and other data-protection laws, you have the right to request deletion of your data. If you prefer not to use the in-app delete button, you can submit a formal data-deletion request to privacy@lightcode.org — include “Data Deletion Request” in the subject line. We will process your request within 7 days and confirm completion by email.
